Court Records Raise Questions About Planning Board Member Greg Unger’s Past

Planning Board member Greg Unger has recently jumped into the #MeToo movement, defending women of the Toxic Townie Cult from a lot of bad words not directed at them on local social media pages. His online commentary has become a source of amusement rather than inspiration for many in the community.

As we have documented in the past, Unger is carrying around a shady past with him that hasn’t changed much and doesn’t look like it will any time soon. Just look at this type of Townie nonsense, trying to intimidate someone by swerving a vehicle at them:

That pattern continued recently when Unger took to social media on Sunday to stick his chest out, pretending to do so in defense of women.

And he was challenged with respect to his own past.

His response?

His response was difficult to follow, though readers can likely infer his intended point.

But is it true?

Needless to say, we have conflicting information that Mr. Unger does not want disclosed. This is actually a very serious matter and we are redacting the name and address of the victim. Court records and filings raise questions regarding allegations of domestic violence involving Greg Unger. And harassment. And stalking. He also has had a restraining order placed against him in Rhode Island.

Why you ask?

  • Harassing phone calls and texts
  • Encouraging the victim to commit suicide
  • Harassing postings and comments on social media
  • Driving by the victim’s residence repeatedly over an extended period.

As we learned when it came to light that Unger has abused police resources for years, Unger’s tactics in every case of conflict involve the same thing:

  • Antagonize.
  • Manipulate.
  • Play the victim.
  • Overburden police resources to generate a case through frivolous complaints.
  • Use ongoing intimidation tactics nonstop to create anxiety and terror in his victims.

In Unger’s case, a domestic violence call in 2021 then turned into a restraining order in 2023. We’ll begin with the 2021 beating and strangulation charges below:

After a night of drinking Planning Board member Greg Unger got into an argument with his girlfriend, and then allegedly destroyed her phone, attacked her physically and strangled her in the victim’s own words.

As is the case with almost all domestic abusers, we see Unger pivot to being the caring boyfriend who wants to only see his girlfriend get the help she needs once the police and paramedics arrive on scene. But what we also see begin to emerge are some of the hallmark manipulation patterns of a domestic abuser.

With that, let’s fast forward to February of 2023

It’s a truly horrifying and tragic read. Unger’s victim cites a number of forms of abuse. The complainant alleged that Unger’s actions caused her to fear for her safety. You can read the details word by word with an impending sense of horror and disgust.

Here are some of the more damaging statements:

  • “I am scared for my safety.”
  • “In the past Greg has been physically and emotionally abusive.”
  • “I have received numerous messages berating me and telling me to commit suicide.”
  • “I am scared because I believe he is mentally unstable.”
  • “I have seen him driving by my apartment and I am concerned about the number of times.”
  • “In the past he had been violent and gotten away with it, I fear what he is capable of.”

None of this is easy to read and it’s not in keeping with the satirical nature of this blog but it needs to be posted. Not just because there are a lot of incidents that Unger has been involved with over the years that involve stalking, harassment, and overuse of police resources. Not just because he has decided to become a white knight on social media. Not just because he apparently worked with George Miller in a manner that Berkley Crime Report believes warrants
scrutiny and also raises serious ethical concerns about George Miller’s actions.

What makes this issue particularly significant is that Berkley entrusted this individual with public office. The concern, according to critics, is not online arguments but conduct reflected in public records and allegations. We’ve also heard rumblings that Unger is planning to run for the Board of Selectmen.

Do you want someone who was forced to turn his firearms in to police and isn’t allowed to stand next to an ex-girlfriend representing you on any elected or appointed Board, especially the Berkley Board of Selectmen? Isn’t it bad enough that he sits on the Planning Board? A source also reports that Unger drove over to a female resident’s home to harass her after a disagreement on social media over this past weekend. There may even be corroborating video. But again, is that who the voters of Berkley want representing them?

Other Much Larger Questions Remain about Unger

Town Meeting left many residents with the impression that Unger was advancing the objectives of others rather than exercising independent judgment, namely George Miller and Wendy Cochrane, who were pivotal in helping Unger obtain an auto dealer’s license on Locust St. Critics and sources tell us that Unger was being squeezed by neighbors for operating his auto parts business out of his primary residence on Mill St without a special permit and needed a landing spot quickly. Here we go yet again, this looks like the Old Berkley tradition of one corrupt hand washing the other. When does it end? Is a recall petition the appropriate avenue?

So Lifelike!

Berkley needs to do something to regain its integrity.

Smarten up Berkley.
